About Play The Guitar

Calm, structured lessons built around the student

A small Hermanus studio focused on steady progress, musical understanding, and the kind of confidence that comes from genuinely knowing what you're doing.

A small studio in Hermanus

Play The Guitar started as a way to teach the way music should be taught: clearly, patiently, and with each lesson building visibly on the last. The studio is deliberately small — one teacher per student, no group classes, no rushing through material.

Most students stay for years. Some start as nine-year-olds and finish as confident teen performers. Some are adults who decided this was finally the year. Both fit.

Callysta van Niekerk

Callysta has been teaching guitar and piano since 2016, working with students from young children through to adults. Her style is patient, structured, and focused on building real skill rather than quick wins.

She is particularly experienced with school-aged students and adult beginners — both groups that need different things, and tend to thrive on different kinds of encouragement.

She trained at the Campus of Performing Arts, where she completed the ACM Advanced Certificate in Contemporary Popular Music Practice, earning several certificates of merit and distinctions along the way.

Callysta is also a working musician. She performs as a solo artist and with Jasmine Green in The Dolls, a Hermanus duo — so students learn from someone who plays live, not just in the studio.

Jasmine Green

Jasmine teaches healthy vocal technique in a supportive, enjoyable way, helping singers develop confidence from beginner to advanced level. Her approach focuses on breath, support, and pitch as the foundation — and only then on style and repertoire.

Jasmine performs with Callysta in The Dolls, a Hermanus duo, and brings that stage experience into her lessons.
